Student Work: Introduction to Packaging
An ‘introduction to packaging’ assignment from GRA 3110: Graphic Design I. Students were asked to choose an object or item of importance, then create folded packaging specifically for that chosen item. Emphasis was placed on materials, concept, general aesthetic and the challenges associated with designing graphics for a 3-dimensional object that would be handled by the audience.

James Jeffers created a playful and experimental box for his cat. The concept relies on a clever use of die-cuts to create a surprising and entertaining design solution.

This box and sleeve for a missionary’s passport was designed by Emilio Marrero. The design emphasized the ‘travelled’ nature of the passport and the personal intimacy of ‘why’ the passport exists.

A box for Cristina Ordaz’s favorite childhood stuffed elephant (the ‘Big Thing’). Because the physical qualities of the Big Thing were important to Cristina, she emphasized these by adding an open die-cut to the front so that the elephant could be squeezed through the packaging.
